The Project
Concert and Theater Venue De Oosterpoort has long been the cultural heart of Groningen. Following a comprehensive aesthetic and structural renovation of both the interior and exterior in 2016, a complete modernization of the building's thermal infrastructure was initiated. Late in 2016, Deerns Engineering Consultants, in collaboration with the Municipality of Groningen, specified the high-efficiency commercial heating and hot water systems from Eco Heating Systems to replace the venue's aging plant room.
A regional partnership
Strategic consultations between Eco Heating Systems and the Municipality of Groningen began early in the project's planning phase. This collaboration builds upon a strong historical relationship established during the successful outfitting of the Martiniplaza Convention Center and Topsporthal. Following that reference project, Eco Heating Systems is proud to deliver another large-scale municipal infrastructure project for the city of Groningen.
Installation of sustainable heating and hot water systems
The mechanical design developed by Deerns was refined in close coordination with the engineering team at Eco Heating Systems:Main Theater Heating: The four floor-standing Senator+ 550 commercial boilers deliver a combined thermal output of over 2 Megawatts ($>2\text{ MW}$). Configured in an intelligent cascade arrangement, they modulate efficiently to match the variable heating load of the main auditorium. Flue gases are managed via a custom common header system manufactured by Hogenu, routed into a vertical chimney stack extending approximately 23 meters. The "Dia" Building: The Dia building annex is served independently by a cascade of two wall-mounted Ambassador 120 boilers, providing a dedicated heating capacity of $240\text{ kW}$.Backstage Hot Water Production: To fulfill the rapid, high-volume domestic hot water demands of the artists' dressing rooms and shower facilities, a high-efficiency Consul+ 35-150 direct-fired water heater was integrated into the plant design.
The complete mechanical installation is scheduled to be executed during the low-occupancy summer period of 2017 by Croonwolter&dros, a major national mechanical contractor with whom Eco Heating Systems maintains a long-standing project history.
