Advantages and disadvantages Central Heating Boiler

The gas-fired central heating boiler (CV-ketel) is the most commonly used heating system in the business market. This is logical, as heating with a gas boiler has traditionally always performed well. Often, it was also the only option because technology had not yet advanced enough to bring electric heating systems to the market. Nowadays, the situation is different, as there are plenty of alternatives. Electric boilers and heat pumps are increasingly being installed in homes and commercial buildings. However, the gas-fired central heating boiler is not disappearing from the market anytime soon. Curious why this boiler is still an efficient choice? In this blog, we delve into the advantages and disadvantages of the central heating boiler.

The advantages of a central heating boiler

Choosing a central heating boiler as your heating system offers several advantages. The following points can be highlighted below:

  • High-efficiency boilers are becoming increasingly economical. Boilers are developed with ever-more advanced technology, making them highly efficient and reducing gas consumption. This can save you up to 20% on gas usage.
  • A central heating boiler heats up quickly. Because water is heated directly by gas, you have hot water rapidly, and the heating system warms up fast. This provides immediate heat and hot water.
  • Newer boiler models experience fewer breakdowns, provided they are properly maintained.
  • Installation costs for a central heating boiler are low. A new boiler can almost always be easily connected to the existing heating system.
  • Ready for the future. Most central heating boilers are designed to work in combination with a heat pump. By purchasing a heat pump, a hybrid system can be created using the current boiler.

A specific advantage of Eco Heating Systems boilers is that their efficiency increases to over 100% through the use of a stainless steel heat exchanger. This exchanger cools flue gases below the condensation point, generating additional heat. Would you like to know more about how our heat exchanger works? Read our blog on this topic.

The disadvantages of a central heating boiler

There are also several disadvantages associated with using a central heating boiler. We can identify the following drawbacks:

  • A central heating boiler consumes gas. The gas combustion process generates CO2 emissions, meaning a central heating boiler impacts the environment.
  • No subsidies available. No subsidies can be obtained for purchasing a standalone central heating boiler. Subsidies can, however, be applied for when purchasing a heat pump.
  • Maintenance costs: While a central heating boiler experiences few breakdowns when properly maintained, securing a comprehensive maintenance contract to ensure this reliability can increase ongoing costs.
  • No improvement in energy label. Purchasing a traditional central heating boiler does not make your commercial property more sustainable, meaning it will not upgrade the energy label of your building or facility.

Advantages and disadvantages of different types of boilers

In addition to gas-fired boilers, there are other types of boilers available on the Dutch market: the electric boiler and the hybrid boiler system.

Advantages and disadvantages of an electric boiler

An electric boiler heats water in the heating system using a heating element powered by electricity. The advantage of this is that no gas is consumed to heat water, resulting in sustainable heating and fewer CO2 emissions. A disadvantage of the electric boiler is that it consumes a large amount of electricity. Furthermore, it heats up less quickly and has a lower capacity than a gas-fired boiler. An electric boiler is therefore only suitable for use in combination with a heat pump or an auxiliary boiler.

Advantages and disadvantages of a hybrid boiler system

In a hybrid boiler system, the gas-fired central heating boiler supports the electric heat pump, meaning the systems work together. At moments when the heat pump cannot meet the heating demand (during peak hours), the boiler steps in. An advantage is that you save up to 75% on gas consumption and emit less harmful CO2. A disadvantage is that purchasing a heat pump is expensive, and installation costs can increase due to integrating it with the existing gas-fired heating system.

Eco Heating Systems boilers are developed for the commercial market

Eco Heating Systems' boilers are specifically developed for the commercial market and feature high-capacity outputs. They are available in both wall-mounted and floor-standing configurations. Additionally, the boilers can be installed in a cascade arrangement. They feature a built-in cascade controller, allowing multiple boilers to be linked together to achieve an exceptionally high total output. The appliances are highly energy-efficient due to the use of a stainless steel heat exchanger. This allows extra heat to be produced because the flue gases are cooled below the condensation point. Furthermore, all Eco Heating Systems boilers are ready to be linked to a heat pump for a hybrid system. Would you like to know more about how the boiler operates?
