Propane heat pump. Sustainable heating powered by nature.

More and more companies and building owners are seeking sustainable heating solutions. A prime example of such a solution is the propane heat pump. This system uses the environmentally friendly and natural refrigerant propane (R290). But what are the benefits, applications, and considerations of this technology? In this blog, we take a closer look at the propane heat pump.

What is a propane heat pump?

A propane heat pump is a heat pump that uses propane as the refrigerant to provide heating and hot water for a building’s heating system. The heat pump extracts thermal energy from the environment — such as air, water, or the ground. This energy is converted into heat by the refrigerant inside the heat pump. Because propane (R290) boils at -42°C, it heats up when in contact with outside air. The refrigerant is further heated through compression in the compressor, allowing it to transfer the heat efficiently to the building’s heating system.

How a propane heat pump works

The operation of a propane heat pump is based on a cycle of evaporation and condensation.

  1. Evaporation. The refrigerant propane absorbs heat from the outside air or ground, becomes warm, and evaporates.
  2. Compression. The compressor increases the pressure of the vaporized gaseous refrigerant, which further raises its temperature.
  3. Condensation. The heated gas releases its heat to the building’s heating system (radiators or underfloor heating).
  4. Expansion. The gas cools down and flows back to the evaporator. The process and cycle then start again.

This technology makes it possible to heat efficiently even at low outdoor temperatures. Even in freezing conditions, the refrigerant can extract heat from the outside air and convert it into warmth.

Advantages of propane heat pumps

Propane is a natural refrigerant that is environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. It has a very low environmental impact compared to synthetic refrigerants such as R32 or R410A.

Using propane (R290) in a heat pump offers several advantages:

  • It is environmentally friendly. It has a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 3.
  • It has high efficiency. Its excellent thermodynamic properties result in a high COP (Coefficient of Performance).
  • It is future-proof. Natural refrigerants comply with stricter EU regulations.
  • It provides high comfort. Suitable for both space heating and domestic hot water.

Considerations for propane heat pumps

Zijn er dan alleen maar voordelen van de propaan toepassing in warmtepompen? Nee, er zijn ook enkele zaken om rekening mee te houden. Propaan is ontvlambaar. En dat betekent dat extra veiligheidsmaatregelen noodzakelijk zijn. Daarnaast kunnen de installatiekosten hoger zijn vanwege veiligheidsvoorzieningen en specifieke certificaten. Applications of propane heat pumps

Propane heat pumps can be installed in virtually any building. They are often installed as a monoblock heat pump on the roof of a building or commercial property. They are most commonly used in:

  • Residential buildings. For space heating and domestic hot water.
  • Kleine en grote bedrijven, sportaccommodaties, zorginstellingen, ziekenhuizen and kantoren. Ze zijn milieuvriendelijk en energiezuinig.
  • New installations. Especially in combination with low-temperature heating systems, such as underfloor heating.

Why choose a propane heat pump?
