The heat exchanger heats the water in the building's heating system. Do you want to learn more about how a heat exchanger works? In this blog, we answer your question.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Operation of a Heat Exchanger<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The heat exchanger is the central component of a boiler and is made of stainless steel. Inside the exchanger is the burner. The burner\u2019s electric ignition electrode produces a spark that ignites the natural gas and starts the combustion process.\n\nThe water in the heating system is circulated by a modulating pump. Surrounding the burner are coils or pipes through which the water flows. The heat from the burner warms the water in these coils. This combustion produces flue gases, which are then condensed in the second section of the boiler. The flue gases mainly consist of water vapor. By condensing this vapor, heat energy is recovered from the process. Hot water droplets are formed, which then warm the water flowing through the coils.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How is water heated in a high-efficiency (HR) boiler?<\/h2>\n<p>The cooled water returning from a radiator or underfloor heating to the boiler first flows through the coils in the upper section of the boiler. The hot droplets from the condensation process warm the water for the first time.\n\nNext, the preheated water flows to the lower section of the boiler, where it is further heated by the burner. This creates two heating stages in a high-efficiency (HR) boiler, allowing it to deliver heat at a higher efficiency while consuming less gas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-514681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecohs.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Condenserende-warmtewisselaar-infographic-1024x759.png\" alt=\"Werking condenserende hoogrendement ketel\" width=\"680\" height=\"504\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Efficiency of a High-Efficiency Boiler<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The condensation in a high-efficiency (HE) boiler provides an additional heating phase, allowing the boiler to deliver sustainable heat. Thanks to this condensation, the CB boilers from Eco Heating Systems achieve an efficiency of up to 107%. As a result, the amount of energy generated is higher than the energy the boiler consumes to heat the water. On an annual basis, this significantly reduces your gas consumption and allows you to heat your commercial property in a sustainable way. The domestic hot water boilers from Eco Heating Systems also achieve this high efficiency due to the unique Eco Injection System. This ensures that domestic hot water is also heated sustainably.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Maintenance of the Heat Exchanger is Important<\/h2>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The heat exchangers in Eco Heating Systems appliances are made of stainless steel. The advantage of a stainless steel heat exchanger is that it generally has a longer lifespan than, for example, an aluminum exchanger. Stainless steel is less sensitive to fluctuating pH levels, withstands high temperatures well, and is less prone to clogging and fouling. However, maintenance of the heat exchanger and the boiler is crucial. Regular maintenance extends the lifespan of both the boiler and the heat exchanger. If maintenance is neglected, the likelihood of a fouled heat exchanger increases. This causes the exchanger to function less efficiently, increases the risk of malfunctions, and forces the appliance to consume more gas to deliver the required amount of heat.
